From now on you will find products from the Malmoe-based artist and designer Sanna Holmberg at APLACE. Handmade clay mugs, plates and vases that are both the perfect addition to the home and as a Christmas gift! In an interview together with us, Sanna tells us about her love for ceramics and the inspiration behind her work.

Tell us about Sanna Holmberg, how did everything start?
– I’ve always created in different forms, from when I was a child and painted, to when I started preparatory art school and was able to explore color and shapes in all its materials and forms. That led me to the architecture school KADK in Copenhagen, where I studied architecture from an artistic perspective. I was often drawn to form and concept, and also the development of it. That process thinking is still something I use in my creative work when it comes to developing my ideas. To get closer to the feeling and the hand in my work, I found ceramics where I could get an outlet for all this. I am completely in love with the material and since I started I’ve spent all my free time in my studio. One thing led to another and here I am!

What’s your biggest source of inspiration?
– I often think about shapes and colors and gets inspired by different kind of things every day. I always try to be very free in my thoughts and in what I can get inspired by. But a lot of my inspiration comes from art and everyday objects, functions that can be both challenged and disguised. I like to explore and challenge the field between art and everyday objects, and often want to contrast with scale and proportions. I want my objects to stand out, be a contrast and eye-catcher in people’s otherwise beige and white homes.

How does your creative process look like?
– I usually start to think about how I’m going to do everything, and at the same time be very free in my thoughts about how the results will be. When I start with a project I usually just go for it and won’t give up until I’m completely satisfied with the result!

What kind of different techniques and material do you usually work with?
– Mainly I work with clay and tend to use different methods like rolling, casting, turning and so on. In addition to clay, I also work with materials such as wood and fabric. When it comes to technique, I’m not that faithful to the method, I’m faithful to my idea. That’s why the process is always so exciting. It often contains a challenge with one or more problems to solve, which makes it both exciting and fun!

Tell us a little more about the products we just received from you!
– The products that just landed at APLACE is all handmade in my studio in Malmoe. I wanted to challenge both shapes and colors with these products, and at the same time make something that could be a part of every home. They are everyday objects with a twist and function gathered in one!
