APLACE x Emelie Josefin
Emelie Josefin makes this year's Christmas wrapping paper 2023. For us she tells us about her inspiration, Christmas from a design perspective and Christmas traditions.
Emelie is a designer and illustrator with a background in design agencies, but in recent years she has started to work more specifically with illustrations and crafts.
Hi Emelie! You are responsible for this year's Christmas paper. Tell us about the design!
- Hi! Christmas is so much fun from a design perspective. There's like a small exception when it comes to one's home, it's decorated with figures, glitter and colors in a way that would not be conceivable during the rest of the year. Dark and barren outside, but maxed out indoors. I wanted to reflect that in my design, the dark in contrast with unexpected kitsch, strong colors and warmth.
What is your source of inspiration in your creativity?
- Shapes and materials that I come across in everyday life, both beautiful and ugly. Details on houses, stones and leaves, hands, noses, animals, furniture, food, nice color combinations. It could be a little bit of anything.
How does your creative process usually look like?
- You could say that I have a constantly ongoing creative process. I collect different shapes and objects that I sketch and draw over and over in different ways both on paper and digitally. Then when I'm about to start a project, I usually look through what I've collected to start with some shape or color I feel would fit.
Tell us more about the beautiful aluminum sculptures that will soon land in our stores?
- I work a lot with cut metal objects, and since Christmas is so shiny and silver-glittery, it felt a lot of fun to highlight some of my illustrations for APLACE that can take a proper place and live further on a wall or on a shelf.
What are the most important details you want people to take away from your design?
- I often get so excited and happy about a shape I like, often when it's not too arranged or over thought. It would feel so nice if I could give that feeling to others!
Tell us about your Christmas, do you have any traditions that stand out or traditions that are particularly important?
- This Christmas will be special because it's my little son's first Christmas, so I think now is the time to start new Christmas traditions for him and us as a family. Feels very cozy!
Last but not least, what is at the top of the wish list?
- Possibly a babysitter, I think!
